South Side Soup Contest
The South Side Soup Contest presented by First National Bank is held each February to ward off the winter doldrums. Participating South Side shops feature kettles of soup prepared by neighborhood restaurants. Participants donate at least $12 and one can of soup to The Brashear Association Food Pantry and are given a map allowing them to “soup-hop” all afternoon. The Mid-Winter Soup Contest benefits not only the local businesses along East Carson Street, but also helps to stock The Brashear Association Food Pantry for months, feeding the needy of our community. Last year, in addition to over 2,000 cans of soup and other goods, the event also raised close to $7,000 for Brashear.
Historic South Side Home Tour
The Historic South Side Home Tour is held the weekend after Mother's Day. Volunteers are positioned in the tour homes to
direct visitors from room to room and answer questions. Volunteers
attend a morning orientation, work either a morning or afternoon
shift (your choice), and may take the tour free of charge during
the opposite shift. This is a great way to volunteer with a friend
and also see some really great South Side homes!
Those
interested in helping plan the Home Tour may join the tour committee,
which meets from October through June. An interest in event planning,
marketing, sponsorship sales, interior design, or architecture is
helpful.
Business
Development Committee
The
Business Development Committee meets quarterly to ensure that a healthy mix
of professional, retail, and restaurant businesses exists in the
South Side business district. Some of the committee's priorities
include implementing a comprehensive streetscape improvement plan,
addressing the ongoing parking challenges present in the neighborhood and maintaining a thriving business district
that complements the South Side Works development.
Design
Committee
The South Side LDC Design Committee reviews proposed commercial and residential
construction, demolition, and façade improvement projects
in the South Side Flats and especially within Local Historic District
boundaries. The committee also oversees locally the Urban Redevelopment
Authority’s Streetface Improvement program and the South Side
Sign Grant program. An interest in the architecture and history
of the South Side and a background in urban design or construction
are desired.
Promotions
Committee
Made up of business owners and marketing, public relations, and
event management professionals, the committee’s charge is
to create a demand for South Side as a place for entertainment,
shopping, dining, and doing business. Committee members assist staff
in planning various promotions that showcase the neighborhood.
Real
Estate Committee
Innovators with a vision for a revitalized South
Side make up this committee, which facilitates both commercial and
residential real estate projects on the South Side.
Experience in building trades or real estate is desired, as participation
requires thoughtful consideration and attention to details.
